There are four types of Degrees: regular, With Honors, Distinguished, and Distinguished With Honors. Having a Degree can also get your Sim higher pay, more vacation days, and easier promotions. Completion of a Degree allows your Sim to enter their chosen career at a higher level than if they were to start it via the normal route.
